After leaving the hi-tech world -- where health and balance are an extreme low priority -- I was determined to learn how to get healthy, have more energy and stop aging so fast. This video represents where this journey has taken me.

I see the study of nutrition as a natural extension of the commitment to health and healing reflected in my massage practice. Proper self-care, expressed in nutrition, exercise and meditative practice are prerequisites to generate a state of happiness and positive energy. I am convinced that body toxins mask or dull the ability of the body-soul system to be an effective instrument of intuition and clarity; conversely, a healthy, clear and well-balanced body supports the unfolding of our best natures.

My study of nutrition has been fascinating, and I have been 'consuming' the literature voraciously. I have completed my Nutrition Educator certification at IET Nutrition - I find that as I learn, I want to share, and so I found myself developing a talk about how we process sugar and how the body maintains (or tries to maintain) the right sugar level in the blood. I have discovered that in order to be healthy, you need to understand the impact of changes in blood sugar on your mood, energy level, and overall well being. This has compelled me to want to understand the subject thoroughly.

In response to the requests of many listeners, this talk, "Sweet Fire," is now available as a videotape or DVD and can be ordered directly on this site. (See also my article on the Sweet Fire Talk in the 5/21 edition of the Santa Cruz Sentinel.)

In the video, I stress the importance of getting as many whole foods in your diet as possible. To learn more about how to get more whole foods in your diet, I recommend the following educational materials from raw food enthusiast, Shazzie.

I am similarly intrigued by the importance of fats -- good fats -- in the diet, and plan on developing a talk on this subject in the near future as well. The healing properties of herbs also fascinate me, so I'm starting to provide information on some of the herbs I've found particularly useful.

I am frequently asked about different kinds of sweeteners and sugars, so I've created a brief guide to sweeteners.

In the video, there is a section on "Suggested Reading". The titles listed there are shown here, with links directly to Amazon.com if you are interested in purchasing them. Also see these other resources used as references in the creation of Sweet Fire.
